Our mission

To expand patient access to microbiome therapies and fuel scientific discoveries that shape the future of health. We build partnerships, fund innovation, and share open-access tools—so that the impact of microbiome science lives on, long after our mission is complete.

Our Vision

We believe in a world where microbiome science revolutionizes health, making life-saving therapies accessible to all.

About OpenBiome Foundation

At OpenBiome Foundation, we’re driven by a simple truth: groundbreaking therapies should reach the patients who need them most. Every day, we see the potential of microbiome-targeted therapies to change outcomes for people facing serious, often life-threatening conditions like Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).

We exist to accelerate that progress—by helping deliver today’s most promising treatments, while laying the groundwork for tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

Our History

When we were founded in 2012, a silent crisis was unfolding. Patients suffering from recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections were trapped in a cycle of relapses, with one therapy—fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)—offering real hope. But there was no safe, standardized way to deliver it.

No national supply chain. No regulatory framework. No clinical playbook.

So we built one.

Our Team

We’re a team of scientists, clinicians, patient advocates, and microbiome enthusiasts. We have a passion for improving public health through the bacteria in us all.

Our Impact

In just over a decade, OpenBiome Foundation has helped bring the microbiome from the margins to the mainstream—expanding access to care, fueling global research, and inspiring a new era in medicine.
