OpenBiome Foundation was once a lifeline for thousands of patients—especially children and those facing recurrent or severe Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infections. While we no longer provide direct treatments, our commitment to C. diff patients remains unwavering. Through advocacy, research, and knowledge sharing, we continue to fight for access to life-saving microbiome-based therapies and support the clinicians, researchers, and families who rely on them.
We help hospitals build and sustain their own fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) programs
In line with the FDA 2022 enforcement discretion guidance – our training and technical assistance support safe, standardized in-house stool banking programs—improving access to effective care and creating new opportunities for clinical research.

Advocating for Patient Access
We advocate for regulatory policies that protect access to microbiome-based treatments for ALL C. diff patients – especially pediatric patients and adults with severe or fulminant disease. Our current efforts focus on reinstating FDA enforcement discretion for stool banks—a vital pathway that will ensure no patient is left behind.
Advancing Cutting-Edge Research
We’re supporting a crucial randomized trial for MTP-301P, a novel powdered fecal microbiota transplant (FMT), to treat Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in hospitalized adults. Currently, critical CDI patients have limited options beyond high-risk surgery. Led by Dr. Byron Vaughn, this study aims to establish MTP-301P’s feasibility as a non-surgical alternative, with a primary focus on changes in CRP levels and clinical outcomes, offering a potential new lifeline for those battling the most severe forms of this infection.

Increasing Scientific Understanding
We proudly support the Peggy Lillis Foundation and its annual Scientific Symposium, a vital gathering of physicians, scientists, and patients that expands clinical understanding and use of microbiome-based therapies for C. diff and beyond.
Our Work

Expanding Access
We break down barriers to microbiome therapies, so patients can get the care they need—when and where they need it.

Funding Boldly
We support pioneering scientists and high-impact research that accelerate the future of microbiome therapies.

Building Systems
We create open-access tools, train providers, and support infrastructure that will last long after our work is done.

Collaborating Globally
We partner with local and global leaders to build solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and informed by diverse communities.
