Coordinating and Convening Services

OpenBiome brings together clinicians, patients, researchers, policy makers, and funding agencies to identify and pursue the most promising directions in microbiome science. We support interdisciplinary teams by serving as a neutral-third party facilitator with deep subject matter expertise.

Our Approach to Coordinating and Convening

As a nonprofit and trusted expert in microbiome science, OpenBiome is uniquely positioned to coordinate efforts between academic and medical institutions, patient advocates, industry groups, and philanthropic organizations. We facilitate workshops that help leaders in the field to harmonize approaches, discuss future directions, and forge new collaborations.

Whether it’s a half-day workshop or a year-long convening of stakeholders, we have you covered.

Previous Workshop Topics

Developing Microbiome-based Therapeutics for Crohn’s Disease

In May 2022 , OpenBiome co-hosted a workshop on future research directions for Crohn’s disease, a painful and potentially debilitating inflammatory bowel disease. The half-day workshop was hosted in San Diego as part of Digestive Disease Week and was attended by approximately 30 leading researchers from around the world spanning adult and pediatric gastroenterology. This workshop was made possible thanks to generous support from the Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Key workshop objectives included:

  • Sharing experiences on the promises and challenges of evaluating investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for Crohn’s disease
  • Standardizing patient selection, investigational FMT dosing, and co-interventions across clinical trials
  • Outlining a roadmap for future collaborations

“The highlight of Digestive Disease Week.”

— Dr. Ari Grinspan, MD. Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and the Director of the GI Microbial Therapeutics at Mount Sinai Health System

“Thank you to OpenBiome for organizing this incredible discussion.”

— Helmsley Charitable Trust

“We need collaborative efforts like this and let's get started—it means a lot to patients like ourselves.”

— Tina Aswani Omprakash, Crohn’s patient and health advocate
